In a short statement that could only have been published by a company run by Tim Sweeney, Epic Games have bluntly announced that the price of V-Bucks, the virtual currency used to buy stuff in Fortnite, is going up.
The one line explanation for the increase reads:
The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we’re raising prices to help pay the bills.
Three things to consider here!
1) In most places that Fortnite is played in, the average worker and consumer has suffered for years through a succession of inflationary crises, first during the pandemic, and more lately through psychotic government policy affecting global markets. So yes, the cost of everything has gone up.
2) That burden is one being borne by workers and consumers. As the ones actually having to pay more for pretty much everything, while wage growth remains stagnant, we understand that. Meanwhile Epic Games, the company that developed Fortnite and runs Fortnite, makes billions of dollars every year. By raising the price of V-Bucks to compensate for increased running costs, which a company making billions of dollars every year can easily absorb, that company is simply transferring the burden of inflation from their own books onto those of the already-suffering consumers.
3) Epic Games can get straight in the bin.
I tried asking Epic for more information on their "the cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we’re raising prices to help pay the bills” statement—a statement that feels exceptionally out of touch in this economy—and was told the company would not be elaborating.
