Despite what [some anime experts might lead people to believe](https://youtu.be/FYlYJxXcITU?ref=aftermath.site), *One Piece* is as political as its ongoing [manga ](https://kotaku.com/i-just-read-1-025-chapters-of-one-piece-and-its-a-damn-1847671952?ref=aftermath.site)and [anime](https://kotaku.com/everything-leading-into-one-pieces-historic-1-000th-epi-1848078095?ref=aftermath.site) are long. So, it’s no surprise that the Straw Hat pirates’ flag is being used as a real-life political symbol.

  
The *One Piece* flag initially appeared this summer in [Indonesia](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3ezvj4d111o?ref=aftermath.site), where some flew it as a [statement](https://time.com/7309534/indonesia-one-piece-pirate-flag-protest-prabowo-free-speech-criticism/?ref=aftermath.site) against President Prabowo Subianto’s calls for Indonesians to display the nation’s flag. It appeared again in Nepal in September, where, in a stunning display of Gen-Z political power, the country erupted in mass protests that culminated in the [resignation](https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/young-anti-corruption-protesters-oust-nepal-pm-oli-2025-09-09/?ref=aftermath.site) of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli—replaced, [via a Discord election of all things](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/9/15/more-egalitarian-how-nepals-gen-z-used-gaming-app-discord-to-pick-pm?ref=aftermath.site), by Sushali Karki, the nation’s [first female prime ministe](https://www.npr.org/2025/09/14/nx-s1-5538411/gen-z-led-anti-corruption-protests-in-nepal-put-its-first-female-prime-minister-in-power?ref=aftermath.site)r. The Nepal protests, which started on September 8, were triggered by a social media ban on September 4, which escalated into nationwide demonstrations demanding [government accountability](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/12/nepal-appoints-its-first-female-pm-after-historic-week-of-deadly-protests?ref=aftermath.site) and an end to [corruption](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crkj0lzlr3ro?ref=aftermath.site). Amid the upheaval, photos circulated online of [protesters ](https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/from-indonesia-to-nepal-anime-pirate-flag-has-become-symbol-of-asian-gen-zs-discontent?ref=aftermath.site)waving the Straw Hat Pirates’ jolly roger, which became a symbol of the youth protests. The flag has also [appeared](https://x.com/marxistJorge/status/1965785851482546355?ref=aftermath.site) in French protests against [budget cuts](https://www.france24.com/en/france/20250903-block-everything-what-we-know-about-the-movement-to-shut-down-france-on-september-10?ref=aftermath.site).

Whenever anime fans are confronted with the refrain that *One Piece* is political or [downright socialist in nature](https://kotaku.com/i-just-read-1-025-chapters-of-one-piece-and-its-a-damn-1847671952?utm%5Fsource=kotaku.com&utm%5Fmedium=link&utm%5Fcampaign=share), the rebuttal is that those championing this viewpoint suffer from [confirmation bias](https://www.reddit.com/r/Piratefolk/comments/12bc0s9/twitch%5Fstar%5Fhasan%5Fthinks%5Fone%5Fpiece%5Fis%5Fsocialist/?ref=aftermath.site), seeing political undertones where none exist. They are wrong. As someone [who read 100 chapters a week during covid](https://kotaku.com/i-just-read-1-025-chapters-of-one-piece-and-its-a-damn-1847671952?utm%5Fsource=kotaku.com&utm%5Fmedium=link&utm%5Fcampaign=share), finally getting caught up on the series, I can say without hyperbole that those people don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. The very fabric of *One Piece* is political, and it's a masterpiece of work fusing real-world political upheaval into its anatomically outrageous superpowers pirate odyssey.

While the rest of the pirate crews making up *One Piece* effectively act as the selfish pillagers found in pop culture folklore, Monkey D. Luffy, his crew, and their pirate allies in their vicinity stumble into political upheaval on the islands they visit. Instead of being opportunistic pirates who plunder the disenfranchised for treasure and go on their merry way, they become freedom fighters.

Each island the Straw Hats visit presents a unique political dilemma, often reflecting real-world issues. The Straw Hats don’t preach, but their presence sparks rebellion, liberation, and emotional reckoning for the oppressed they befriend on their journey for the series’ eponymous treasure.

Throughout their journey, the crew has confronted:

- Institutional abuse perpetuated by the Marines, AKA the world’s in-universe cops
