There’s been a dark cloud hanging over excellent tactics game *Star Wars Zero Company* since before it even came out: Much of developer Bit Reactor’s staff was [furloughed](https://aftermath.site/podcasts/star-wars-zero-company-furlough-stephen-totilo/), with their return seemingly contingent on the game’s success. Now, happily, at least some of them are back.

“This week, we started the process of returning more of our team back to work at Bit Reactor, an important step forward in our continued support for *Zero Company*,” CEO Greg Foertsch wrote in [a statement posted to social media](https://bsky.app/profile/bitreactor.com/post/3mxcgabtzjk2b?ref=aftermath.site). “Having to ask team members to step away after we navigated unexpected business developments outside of our control and so close to launch was an incredibly difficult decision, but one that was necessary to help us eventually bring as many people back as possible.”

According to [Game File](https://www.gamefile.news/p/star-wars-zero-company-furloughs-update?ref=aftermath.site), Bit Reactor’s headcount is now at “more than half” of what it had been prior to furloughs. That’s good, obviously, but not ideal. Some workers remain on the hook, sans pay, and they can’t wait forever. All this over a game that has *Star Wars* money behind it; you’d figure that Mickey Mouse’s intergalactic empire—along with EA—could afford to fund a relatively small studio at least until it’s done supporting one of the best games attached to one of its biggest IPs, but that’s just not the universe we live in, evidently.

Still, it’s better than the layoffs and studio closures we’ve come to expect following success or failure in this volatile era. The company behind *Zero Company* has not been reduced to zero. It lives to fight another day.

“This team means a tremendous amount to me, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together,” wrote Foertsch. “Thank you to our fans for the incredible response to the game and for supporting us along this journey. We look forward to sharing more updates regarding Bit Reactor and *Zero Company* soon.”
