Queer supernatural media has been [having a full-blown renaissance](https://gizmodo.com/the-summer-hikaru-died-this-monster-wants-to-eat-me-queer-horror-anime-crunchyroll-netflix-2000675445?ref=aftermath.site) lately, especially in the arena of [gals falling for sirens and mermaids](https://x.com/maijodox/status/2093878713402220658?s=20&ref=aftermath.site). At the same time, [indie animation has exploded on YouTube](https://gizmodo.com/the-knights-of-guinevere-pilot-brings-some-good-surreal-sci-fi-2000662283?ref=aftermath.site), with everything from [fan reanimations](https://aftermath.site/flcl-reanimated/) and pilots to original series that rival—and often eclipse—studio‑backed Hollywood fare. [Studio Heartbreak](https://studioheartbreak.com/?ref=aftermath.site)’s award-winning indie animated film, *The Lovers*, carries 2026’s yuri mermaid baton with a story that wows at every turn.

*The Lovers*, co-directed by Alice Mao and Sophia Paez and written by Mao, is a fish-out-of-water love story for folks who wondered what *The Shape of Water* would look like if Guillermo del Toro made it gay. It follows chef Sara Baylon ([Vanille Velasquez](https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Vanille-Velasquez/?ref=aftermath.site)), whose marquee problem is generational trauma—specifically, filling the void left by her late father to help keep her family's seafood restaurant afloat. This is also a world where fantastical marvels like sirens are real. Unfortunately for siren Sirena ([Dawn M. Bennett](https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/Dawn-M-Bennett/?ref=aftermath.site)), Sara’s family plans to serve her up on a silver platter for the governor’s inauguration dinner. Here, the gourmet tale doubles as a dangerous sapphic romance, where Sara and her siren paramour could spill each other's guts at any moment.

Just as a room cheers for a baby taking their first steps, the internet has been championing *The Lovers* long before its premiere. Studio Heartbreak raised over $400,000 on Kickstarter within their campaign’s first 45 days. In a [2024 blog post,](https://updates.kickstarter.com/the-creative-download-film/?ref=aftermath.site) Kickstarter listed *The Lovers* as its fifth-highest-funded film and video project in 2023, which the studio justifiably humble-brags about achieving without celebrity or traditional studio backing. Though that’s not to say the industry hasn’t given it any: Some even offered their talents to the film and its promotion. Key among them are Velasquez and Bennett—voice actors known for *Valorant*, *Fire Emblem*, and *My Hero Academia*—who voiced the leads, and artist [Ami Thompson](https://www.gallerynucleus.com/artists/ami%5Fthompson?ref=aftermath.site), known for [*Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse*](https://x.com/AmiThompson%5Fh/status/1670132470275264512?s=20&ref=aftermath.site) and [*KPOP Demon* *Hunters*](https://x.com/AmiThompson%5Fh/status/2088352385165119504?s=20&ref=aftermath.site), who illustrated *The Lovers*’ promotional poster. But what makes *The Lovers* genuinely inspirational as an indie animation project is that its gorgeous animation didn’t come from industry veterans showing out.

In a pinned YouTube comment, Studio Heartbreak wrote that the film’s story was written by Mao when she’d just turned 20, and Paez turned 19 while attending college for “non-animation things”– meaning *The Lovers* is the first-ever project from creators with zero animation or industry experience. After witnessing *The Lovers*' lush, delightfully cluttered background paintings, seamless 3D integration, and a balance of grotesque and provocative imagery, Studio Heartbreak has the juice. For a debut work, *The Lovers* is shockingly polished throughout its fifteen-minute runtime. And the side note on its official website that all the product photos they took of *The Lovers* mini artbook (which I need expeditiously), film poster, and keychains were taken at IKEA is just so real of them.

The film’s already been making festival rounds, winning [Gold](https://fantasiafestival.com/en/news/the-fantasia-international-film-festival-announces-its-2026-audience-awards-and-2027-dates?ref=aftermath.site) at the[ Fantasia Audience Awards](https://fantasiafestival.com/en/film/the-lovers?ref=aftermath.site) and screening at [Annecy ](https://www.awn.com/news/annecy-2026-sets-animated-thrills-chills-programming-lineup?ref=aftermath.site)and [HollyShorts](https://thecontending.com/hollyshorts-2026/?ref=aftermath.site) before making its world premiere on YouTube for free. In just two days, it’s hooked nearly 400K views. What’s got my heart growing three sizes over *The Lovers* is how Studio Heartbreak’s engagement with its growing fandom feels like a [for-us-by-us phenomenon](https://studioheartbreak.com/pages/fanclub?ref=aftermath.site). Not only has it disabled monetization “for a better viewing experience” and added an email address to its description inviting volunteers to subtitle *The Lovers* in languages other than Tagalog and English, but it's also got a [pretty generous fanmerch policy](https://studioheartbreak.com/pages/fanmerch-policy?ref=aftermath.site) that allows fellow independent artists to create artwork, AMVs, free games, and video essays. What’s more, Studio Heartbreak is a class act for posting a [link to the portfolio of artists](https://x.com/studioheartbrk/status/2093890207804203246?s=20&ref=aftermath.site) who helped bring *The Lovers* to life.

It's incredibly easy to get caught up in doomerism in the arts. If you’re not in the throes of a remarkable original show being [canceled](https://aftermath.site/you-wait-ages-for-a-bus-and-then-two-come-along-at-once/), you’re inundated with news of [revered artists revealing they fuck with AI](https://automaton-media.com/en/news/goodnight-punpun-creator-inio-asano-says-the-manga-scenes-attitude-towards-ai-is-one-of-the-reasons-he-put-mujina-into-the-deep-on-hiatus/?ref=aftermath.site). Either way, the whole song-and-dance is soul-fatiguing, so it's refreshing to see that the “old ways” of creating out of passion and having that passion received and supported yield an independent, unabashedly queer animated work.

Studio Heartbreak may be a ways off from being “an internet-based animation studio of girls who are going to change the world,” as they declare in *The Lovers*’ YouTube description, but I’m hoping their next project about “VTubers, androids, and biotech startups that play god” captures lightning in a bottle twice.
