Star Wars Zero Company's Success Is Bittersweet

What should be a victory celebration for a breakout game has been hampered by a messy lawsuit and developers without pay.

Star Wars Zero Company has had a rocky few weeks to say the least. By all accounts the game is doing gangbusters, although it is in desperate need of optimization (which is very XCOM). We here at Aftermath are really in love with it, particularly Luke, Chris and Nathan. Unfortunately, that joy was tempered by much of the staff of developer Bit Reactor getting furloughed prior to the game’s release.

Recently, former Kotaku bossman turned Game File author Stephen Totilo broke the story of the furlough and a Bit Reactor lawsuit over who owns the company. He also broke a story about PlayStation’s absurd argument in court where they outright stated that two people can’t really “own” the same game digitally, which made us tremendously confused and annoyed.

On Aftermath Hours, Luke and Chris caught up with our former boss to talk Game File scoops, digital ownership, the messy situation that led to the furloughs and how, despite all of that, Star Wars Zero Company is still one of the best Star Wars games in years, a fantastic debut hit that hopefully indicates that there is more to come from Bit Reactor, provided they can just find a way to do right by their workers and get them paid.

You can find this week's episode below and on Spotify, Apple, or wherever else you prefer to listen to podcasts. If you like what you hear, leave a review so that we can keep creating Aftermath Hours and don’t have to furlough me and Luke.
