Star Fox Looks Fucked Up

They massacred my boy (complimentary?)

Star Fox Looks Fucked Up
Nintendo

Today Nintendo went live with a surprise Direct to debut a Switch 2 remake of Star Fox 64. It is the first new (or new-ish) Star Fox game since 2016. Cool! Great! We love to see it! Or we would if not for the fact that Fox and his furry flotilla of friends look…wrong.

Long have the people clamored for a Nintendo game with hyperrealistic graphics. Finally, they got one, and it’s the series that stars cartoon animals. The monkey’s paw, also as realistic as modern hardware can render, curls. Before the Direct was even over, unflattering comparisons started rolling in:

To hear some tell it, even the furries are upset.

But Star Fox has always been an odd proposition; maybe Nintendo’s just decided to embrace that strangeness to the fullest extent possible, rather than unknowingly bungling its way into a Sonic-with-human-teeth situation. If nothing else, it’s clearly having fun puppeteering its weird new ani-mannequins, so much so that it’s decided we should be able to as well. During the Direct, Nintendo also showed off a new feature that will let you change your face in game chat to look like a Star Fox character. This is no static image, either; when you move, Fox moves. Basically, you get your own Star Fox Vtuber. Opinions on this have varied, but I think it absolutely rules.

So yeah, Fox and company looked fucked up now. This is an objective fact. But can we put a qualitative judgement on that? No. It could as easily be a grave portent as it could be a sign of good things to come. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long. Star Fox releases on June 25.
